WE TOY DRIVE
A Toy Drive Benefiting Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital
Nov. 1st - Dec. 3rd with the Final Toy Drive-By on Dec. 4th from 6:30 p.m.
to 11 p.m.
13215 114th St Largo, FL 33778
The WE TOY Drive began several years ago when Joe White and his
partner, Phillip Etheredge (WE), hosted a Holiday Mixer, inviting friends
and neighbors to come by and enjoy a night of fraternity, togetherness
and be merriment.
WE treated the gatherings - this will be the 7th year - as an open
house, welcoming all to come and enjoy. Every year, WE would be asked
the same question: "What can we bring?" One day WE decided to answer
with "A toy," and that's how the first WE Toy Drive was launched in
2019.
At the time, Joe was working at the Eye Institute of West Florida, a
business that's been a part of the Tampa Bay Area for over 40 years
with 5 locations, so WE were able to have drop boxes at each location, and
WE asked our guests to bring a toy.
When our holiday party guests began bringing many, many gifts, we
decided to build on the idea of a gift for a child and gather even
more gifts for children in need during the holiday season.
WE collected nearly 500 toys our first year: it was a huge success,
and we donated every toy, game and gift to the National Pediatric
Cancer Foundation. WE chose this foundation because WE have friends
who lost a child, a nephew or a grandson to cancer, and wanted to do
something to keep the legacy of those children going.
The WE Toy Drive was born.
2020 wasn't an easy year for anyone in the world and WE were not sure
if WE could continue with the party/toy drive. But seeing how the
world adapted with birthdays and celebrations by doing caravans and
parades by houses for holidays and birthdays, WE decided to evolve the
Toy Drive into a Toy Drive-By, keeping everything outside and
maintaining social distancing and safety for all.
Last year WE chose Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital because our
neighbor's son is one of the first heart transplant survivors of
Florida, and WE wanted to give back in their name.
With 9 locations for toy drop boxes and friends and family from all
over, WE were able to collect over 600 toys, despite not being able to
hold a traditional party. Surrounding neighborhoods got involved and
came by to see all that WE did and we were amazed by the support that
WE got from our community, People brought hundreds of toys, and all
boxes at drop-off locations were filled to the brim. WE discovered
that Amazon delivery drivers knew our address by memory since they
were coming every day, sometimes twice to drop off toys that people
were sending for the toy drive.
The 2020 Toy Drive-By took off and was an amazing experience and
success and WE wanted to continue to keep this alive.
For 2021 WE know the toy drive is going to grow even larger. And we'd
like your help in publicizing it to help.
WE are continuing with the Toy Drive-By theme, having neighbors
decorate and light the streets with holiday joy for all to come back
and enjoy. WE have again collaborated with the same businesses as in
previous years, and we've added many more, including two global
companies.
Having the support and participation with our grassroots community
along with global companies has expanded the Toy Drive more than WE
could have ever imagined, WE are even in discussions with expanding
our Toy Drive to multiple Johns Hopkins locations, specifically in
Baltimore, Maryland.
WE are proud and humbled to organize this event each year; it's become
a passion, a calling, a mission - and it makes a difference in the
lives of so many children.
Who knew that answering a simple question could have such an impact on
the community? So our question ("What can I do to help?") for the
Tampa Bay community has become an invitation to everyone to engage
with our reply to the annual question
"What can I bring?" How about a toy, a good thought for children in
need; and the hop-in-action belief that this year will end on a better
note for all.
